Een mooi voorbeeld hiervan is het gebruik van AI voor cultuurhistorisch onderzoek, waarbij we historische gebouwen automatisch extraheren uit oude kaarten, zogenaamde minuutplans.<\/p>\n<p>Minuutplans zijn 19e-eeuwse tekeningen die als basis dienden voor de topografische militaire kaart (TMK). Voor het trainen van ons AI-model hebben we minuutplans gebruikt van de gemeente Uithuizen (provincie Groningen). Nadat het model daar succesvol bleek te werken, hebben we het getest in een tweede gebied: de omgeving van Lemele in Overijssel.<\/p>\n<p>De resultaten waren veelbelovend. Van de 23 aanwezige gebouwen werden er 21 correct gedetecteerd en omgezet in een shapefile. Slechts twee gebouwen werden gemist (false negatives) en \u00e9\u00e9n object werd onterecht als gebouw herkend (false positive). Dit alles gebeurde binnen ongeveer 20 minuten,\u00a0een dubbele tijdwinst. Niet alleen is dit veel sneller dan handmatig tekenen, maar de software kan ook op de achtergrond draaien terwijl je ander werk doet.<\/p>\n<p>Opvallend is dat de gebouwen in Overijssel,\u00a0voornamelijk boerderijen, morfologisch verschilden van die in Uithuizen. Toch behaalde het model een nauwkeurigheid van 91%, wat uitzonderlijk hoog is voor automatische extractie. Veel van de ge\u00ebxtraheerde boerderijen bestaan inmiddels niet meer, waardoor deze techniek snel inzicht geeft in historische bebouwing. Bovendien zijn deze verdwenen boerderijen vaak archeologisch relevant, met wortels die teruggaan tot de Middeleeuwen.<\/p>\n<p>Met deze technologie brengen we het verleden razendsnel in kaart.
