Het aantal reizigers dat van en naar station Hardenberg reist, neemt de komende jaren flink toe. Dit komt onder andere door de populaire Vechtdallijnen en de ontwikkelingen in de omgeving van het station, zoals de nieuwbouw van de Sportboulevard en het Ziekenhuis. De tunnel zorgt ervoor dat fietsers en voetgangers het spoor veilig kunnen oversteken. Het perron is vanuit de tunnel bereikbaar met een trap en een lift. Aan beide zijden van het spoor ligt in het schetsontwerp een fietsenstalling en parkeerterrein zodat er voldoende ruimte is voor reizigers om te parkeren. De bushaltes worden verplaatst zodat reizigers veilig en snel kunnen overstappen van de bus in de trein of andersom.
