De tunnel is behalve een stationstunnel ook interwijkverbinding. Tegelijkertijd is de iets verderop gelegen autotunnel geopend. De tunnels zijn eerder opgeleverd dan gedacht, dat kan dus ook! Fijn voor Elst, nu de overweg gesloten is kunnen er in de spits vier sprinters per uur rijden.<\/p>\n<p>Samen met de tunnels is ook het station vernieuwd: drie jaar geleden was station Elst nog de spreekwoordelijke \u201cplank in het weiland\u2019\u2019, nu is er een zichtbaar en aantrekkelijk station. Er is een extra overkapping op het perron en een goed zichtbare luifel boven de trappen gekomen die zowel de interwijktunnel als het station markeert. Bescheiden, passend bij de schaal van het dorp, maar toch duidelijk zichtbaar. De tunnels en het station zijn ontworpen door architect Wienke Scheltens.
